AltQuill Alt Text suggests alt text for images in your media library. It works with any image. When the image belongs to a WooCommerce product, it also uses the product name and attributes your store already holds.
How it works:
When you upload an image, the plugin queues it for a suggestion.
Media > Alt Text Review has a “Generate next 5” button that finds images with no alt text and processes them in batches (WP-CLI: wp altquill-alt-text bulk).
The same page lists pending suggestions. You can edit the text, then Approve or Reject each one.
By default nothing is written to an image until you approve it. Automatic publishing is a setting you must turn on yourself.
Existing alt text is never replaced unless you tick “Overwrite existing”.
Optionally, the plugin can also suggest an image title and caption. Both are off by default.
What a suggestion looks like:
One sentence, under 125 characters.
No “image of” or “picture of” at the start.
It describes the product visible in the image.
It uses the product name and attributes your store provides.
Languages: English and Spanish. By default the plugin follows your site language. You can change this in Settings.
Usage: the Settings page shows how many images you have used this month and your plan limit. The service supplies these numbers.
Your responsibility: the plugin produces suggested text. You remain responsible for reviewing it and for the accessibility of your site. The plugin does not make a site compliant with any law or standard.
WooCommerce is optional. Without it, the plugin works on media-library images and does not use product data.
External services
This plugin needs an external service to generate text. It does not work without one.
Service: the AltQuill API, operated by M&M Consulting Firm LLC.

What is sent, and when:
When an image is processed (in the background after upload, or from the bulk button), the plugin sends a copy of the image resized to at most 768 pixels when the WordPress image editor is available (otherwise the original image, up to 8 MiB), the product name and product attributes (if the image is a WooCommerce product image; otherwise the image title), the chosen language, and your API key. The plugin never sends the image’s URL.
When you press “Refresh usage” in Settings, the plugin sends your API key to fetch your monthly usage and plan limit. Each generation response also returns the current usage.
Nothing is sent until you enter an API key in Settings.
What the service keeps:
The image is processed in memory and is not stored.
Text is generated on the operator’s own hardware. No third-party AI provider receives your images.
For each request the service records: key id, request id, timestamp, language, character count, processing time and status. This is used for usage counts and billing.
Account records include your email, plan, and a hash of your API key. Your WordPress database stores the API key so it can authenticate requests; AltQuill stores only its hash.
Cloudflare provides HTTPS delivery. Stripe processes paid subscriptions and supplies subscription status associated with your email. The plugin sends no shopper data or analytics events.
Generated suggestions and the most recent generation request id remain in your WordPress database for review and diagnostics. Uninstall removes plugin settings, usage cache, and review metadata; approved alt text remains.
